The reduction process of Pidgeon Process magnesium smelting belongs to the solid phase reaction process. The solid phase reaction requires a fine grain size. The charge of the Pidgeon Process magnesium smelting is composed of three raw materials: calcined white, ferrosilicon and fluorite. The chemical composition of these three raw materials often changes in industrial production and must be compounded according to the corresponding reaction formula below.
For the solid phase reaction, in addition to a certain degree of fineness and proportion of the charge, the charge must be pressed to increase the mutual contact between the materials,in order to shorten the free travel of the silicon atom to reduce MgO. Therefore, the finer the charge, the larger the pressure of the pressing, and the closer the materials are in contact with each other, the more favorable the reduction process. After the shape of the charge is pressed, the amount of charge in the reduction tank can also be increased, and the capacity of the single tank can be increased.
Therefore, the calcined white after calcination through the magnesium rotary kiln needs to be subjected to batch-fine grinding-pressing before being introduced into the reduction furnace. The detailed process flow is that the dolomite after calcination is sent to the silo by the bucket elevator; the ferrosilicon is crushed to below 20mm by the jaw crusher, and is fed into the silo storage bin by the bucket elevator; the fluorite powder is fed into the fluorite powder bin by bucket elevator. The three raw materials stored in the storage bin are mixed and grinded by the micro-machine control into the ball mill, and the particle size of the raw material is required to be<100 mesh. After the mixed powder passes through the elevator, the storage bin and the scraper conveyor,then enters ball press machine,which is pressed into pellets. The batching system uses an intelligent control system, and the entire process is fully automated with computer monitoring. The ball mill is driven by a 10kV high-voltage motor, which reduces the power consumption loss compared to the original 380V low-voltage power distribution operation.
The ball-making workshop is equipped with 3 sets of dust collection systems, which are respectively in the broken part of ferrosilicon, the grinding part of the ingredients and the ball press machine part. After the comprehensive dust collection treatment, the operating environment of the ball making workshop is greatly improved compared with the traditional workshop.
