Lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) or expanded clay (exclay) is a light weight aggregate made by heating clay to around 1,200 °C (2,190 °F) in a rotary kiln. The yielding gases expand the clay by thousands of small bubbles forming during heating producing a honeycomb structure. LECA has an approximately round or potato shape due to circular movement in the kiln, and is available in different sizes and densities. LECA is used to make lightweight concrete products and other uses.
At present, the mature process of LECA preparation by fly ash has four methods, rotary kiln, sintering machine, waterfall rotary kiln, sintering furnace. Except for the technology of rotary kiln, the ash consumption of lightweight expanded clay aggregate reach above 80% through other methods, but it is not suitable used for lightweight aggregate concrete, because of high bulk density and low cylinder pressure intensity after sintering. However, it has the features of lighter bulk density bulk density and higher strength, through the sintering of rotary kiln. However, the ash consumption only can reaches 30%. How to combine the above processes to achieve the requirements of lightweight aggregate concrete, which has been the difficulty of the production of LECA from fly ash.

Bulk density: 700 ~ 900kg / m³;

Fly ash concrete bulk density: 1800kg / m³;
C50 (high strength concrete);

The market price of LECA produced by new technology is also higher than other processes.
