The roller bearing is point contact, like a ball rolling on the ground; the sliding bearing is plane contact, like snowboard slide on the snow.

The main different as follow:

Roller bearing: The rolling body of support shaft is rotate with shaft.

Sliding bearing: The bearing shell of support doesn’t rotate with shaft.

Sliding bearing is the bearing that working under the sliding friction. Its working is steady, reliable, no noise. Under the lubrication condition, the sliding surface is separated and don’t contact directly, so the friction and wearing is greatly reduced, the oil-film has the function of absorb the vibrating. But the friction is large when ball mill start. The part of shaft that be supported by bearing is called trunnion, the part that connect with trunnion is called bearing shell. The bearing shell and bearing liner materials are known as sliding bearing materials. The common sliding bearing materials include bearing alloy(also called Babbitt metal or white metal),wear resistance cast iron, copper base and aluminum base alloy, powder metallurgy materials, plastic, rubber, and so on. The sliding bearing workings is usually under the low speed and heavy load situation, or the place that maintenance and fill up lubrication oil difficult.

Rolling bearing is composing by outer ring, inner ring, rolling body and cage. The function of inner ring is match with shaft and rotates with shaft, the function of outer ring is match with bearing block, and support, the rolling body is distribute between inner ring and outer ring uniform with the help of cage, the size and quantity of rolling body is effect the performance and lifetime of rolling bearing directly, the cage can make the rolling body distribution uniform, to avoid the rolling body fall off, and to bring the rolling body rotating with lubrication functions.

Rolling bearing is easy for operation and maintenance, running steady, high start performance, with heavy load under the middle speed condition. Compare with sliding bearing, the radial dimension of roller bearing is bigger, the damping capacity is bad, the lifetime is short when during high speed and big noise.

The first performance of different between rolling bearing and sliding bearing is structure. The rolling bearing support the rotation shaft by rolling body rotating, so the connect is a point, the more rolling body, the more connect point; sliding bearing support the rotation shaft by slide surface, so the connection is an area. The second different is moving method, rolling for rolling bearing and sliding for sliding bearing, so the friction is completely different.
